Why Is My Hiace Overheating? Radiator Fan and Cooling System Checks
Temperature gauge climbing in your Hiace? Learn what to do first, how to check the radiator fan, and which cooling parts to look at before the engine is damaged.
Short answer: if your Toyota Hiace temperature gauge is climbing, pull over safely and switch the engine off. Do not open the radiator cap while hot. A radiator fan that does not run is one common cause, along with low coolant, a leak, a failed thermostat or a blocked radiator. Overheating can damage an engine quickly, so have it checked before driving on.
What should I do first if my Hiace overheats?
- Pull over somewhere safe and turn the engine off as soon as you can.
- Do not open the radiator cap or the coolant bottle while the engine is hot. The system is under pressure and hot coolant can cause serious burns.
- Wait until the engine has cooled, then check the coolant level in the overflow bottle.
- Look for leaks under the van and around the radiator and hoses.
- Do not keep driving with the gauge in the red. Call for a tow or get it checked.
What causes a Hiace to overheat?
| Cause | Typical sign |
|---|---|
| Low coolant or a leak | Coolant level dropping, puddles, sweet smell |
| Radiator fan not running | Gauge rises in traffic, falls when moving fast |
| Failed thermostat | Overheats quickly or the top hose stays cool |
| Blocked or corroded radiator | Slow overheating, visible damage or deposits |
| Cracked overflow bottle or cap | Coolant loss, pressure problems |
| Water pump failure | Noise, leaks, rapid overheating |
The pattern matters. A van that overheats stuck in traffic but cools down at highway speed points at the fan, because airflow at speed does the fan's job. This is a rule of thumb, not a diagnosis.
How do I check whether the radiator fan works?
With the engine cold and the van parked safely, start the engine and let it warm up. The fan normally switches on when the engine reaches operating temperature, or when the air conditioning is on. If the gauge climbs past normal and the fan never runs, the fan, its relay, its fuse, its temperature sensor or its wiring may be at fault. Check the fuse and relay first. If the fan motor is seized, cracked or has a broken blade, replace the fan.
The fan shroud directs air through the radiator. A broken or missing shroud reduces cooling even when the fan runs, so look at it too. Browse Toyota Hiace radiator fans and fan shrouds, or radiator fans and shrouds for every vehicle.
Which other cooling parts might I need?
- Radiator. Replace it if it leaks, is corroded or is blocked. See Toyota Hiace radiators and radiators for every vehicle.
- Coolant overflow bottle. A cracked bottle loses coolant and pressure. See Toyota Hiace coolant overflow bottles.
- The rest of the range. Browse all cooling parts.
Our range keeps growing, and we hold used genuine parts that are not all listed online yet. If you need a cooling part you can't see, ask us (details below).
How do I pick the right part for my Hiace?
- Generation. Cooling parts are specific to the H200 or another generation. If unsure, read Which Toyota Hiace do you have?.
- Engine. Petrol and diesel Hiaces can use different cooling parts. Check the engine on the listing.
- Year range and options. Air conditioning and engine variants can change the parts, so match them to your van.
Send your plate or VIN through a parts inquiry and we will confirm the fit before you buy. When we confirm a part in writing and it does not fit, our Fitment Guarantee covers the correct part or a refund, plus approved return freight. Warranty terms are in the warranty policy.

FAQs
Can I drive a Hiace that is overheating?
No. Keep driving and you risk serious engine damage, such as a warped head or a blown head gasket. Stop, let it cool, and find the cause.
Why does my Hiace only overheat in traffic?
Usually the radiator fan is not providing enough airflow when the van is slow or stopped. Check the fan, its fuse and relay.
Is it safe to add water instead of coolant?
Plain water is a temporary measure to get you to a workshop. Use the correct coolant mix long-term, because water alone does not protect against corrosion or freezing.
How often should I replace coolant?
Follow the interval in your owner's manual or your mechanic's advice.
Do you ship cooling parts to Australia?
Yes. We deliver anywhere in New Zealand and also ship to Australia.
