Hiace Window Won't Go Up or Down: Regulator, Motor or Switch?
Power window stuck or dropping inside the door of your Hiace? Listen for the clues to tell a failed regulator from a motor, fuse or switch, then buy the right part.
Short answer: if you hear the window motor running but the glass does not move, or the glass drops down inside the door, the window regulator has usually failed. If you hear nothing at all, check the fuse and switch first. Regulator replacement is a common repair, and the part is specific to your Hiace generation and door.
What does a window regulator do?
The regulator is the mechanism inside the door that lifts and lowers the glass. In many vans it is a cable-and-track or arm assembly driven by a small electric motor. When the cable frays, the plastic clips break or the track jams, the window stops moving properly even though the motor still works. You can browse our window regulators and glass range for every vehicle.
How do I tell a regulator fault from a motor, fuse or switch fault?
Listen while you press the switch:
| What you hear and see | Most likely fault |
|---|---|
| Motor whirs or clicks, glass does not move | Regulator |
| Glass drops into the door, or sits crooked | Regulator or its clips |
| Grinding, crunching or jerky movement | Regulator, a worn track or a cable |
| Nothing at all, from every window | Fuse or master switch |
| Nothing at all, from one window only | That door's switch, wiring or motor |
| Works sometimes, then stops | Worn switch, loose connector or a failing motor |
These are common patterns rather than a diagnosis. Confirm with a visual check behind the door trim before you buy.
Can I drive with a window stuck down?
You can, but the van is not secure and rain will get in. If the glass has dropped inside the door, you can often raise it by hand and hold it with strong tape across the top of the door frame as a temporary measure. Do not leave it that way for long.
What parts might I need?
- Window regulator. The usual fix when the motor runs but the glass does not move.
- Regulator with motor. Some units come as one assembly. The listing shows what is included, and if you're unsure which you need, ask us.
- Door trim clips. Removing the door card often breaks a few, so it helps to have spares on hand.
- Other door parts. If you are inside the door anyway, check the handle and lock parts. See Toyota Hiace door parts or door parts for every vehicle.
How do I get the right Hiace window regulator?
- Generation. Door hardware differs between the H100, H200 and H300. If you are unsure, read Which Toyota Hiace do you have?.
- Side. In NZ, LH is the passenger side (left as you sit in the driver's seat) and RH is the driver's side.
- Power or manual. Match what your door has now.

When we confirm a part in writing and it does not fit, our Fitment Guarantee covers the correct part or a refund, plus approved return freight.
Is replacing a regulator a DIY job?
Many owners do it with basic tools and a free afternoon. You remove the door card, support the glass, release it from the regulator, unbolt the old unit, and fit the new one. The risk is dropping the glass or breaking trim clips. If you have not done it before, a workshop can do it quickly. Warranty terms for new (3 months) and used (30 days) parts are in our warranty policy.

FAQs
Why does my Hiace window go down but not up?
That points to a worn regulator, a weak or failing motor, or a worn switch contact. Listen for whirring or grinding to narrow it down.
How much does a regulator replacement take?
Many people complete it in an afternoon. A workshop can usually do it faster.
Is the regulator the same as the window motor?
No. The motor turns the mechanism; the regulator is the mechanism that moves the glass. Some units are sold together.
Will the same regulator fit both sides?
No. Left and right doors use different parts. Check the side on the listing.
Do you ship window regulators to Australia?
Yes. We deliver anywhere in New Zealand and also ship to Australia.
